Weekly Classroom Feature: School Volleyball Grand-final

29/10/2019
13 weeks of preparation. Students filling roles as PR officers, video analysts, refs, coaches and managers. The Curious Octopuses, the Funky Monkeys and the Bymount Bulls fought out weekly games for most of last term and the beginning of term 4. The Funky Monkeys came out on top of the draw and progressed straight through to the final. While it took a close battle for the Bymount Bulls in their semi-final match up with  the Octopuses to book their own ticket to the final.

The Grand-final was held 2pm on Friday of Week 3. Students of all grades had been suitably excited through a stellar advertising campaign that  included very well designed posters and forced viewing of a hype video. Realistically, Grand-final teams were given run sheets detailing their warm-up times, locations and schedule for pre, mid and post-game interviews. Teams even had a pre-game meeting with a qualified National level ref. Warm-ups started at 1:30pm with the crowd arriving at 2pm ready for action.
Players entered the court through tunnels of supporters, called out individually by megaphone. The national anthem was then played before the game        commenced.
There are no words that can adequately describe the play in the Grand-final. All that can be said is that the students rose to the occasion and all individually played the best games of their seasons. It was a tight duel with many turns of momentum throughout. In the end though, on the back of a well-timed late surge, the Bymount Bulls emerged victorious.
All celebrations were kept sportsmanlike as stickers were awarded to the 3rd place Octopuses, ribbons to the Funky Monkeys and medals to the champion Bymount Bulls. The reffing team (the Octopuses) were also recognised for their impartial efforts with ribbons of their own.
The MVP award, voted on by all players, was then awarded to Ashley Tetley. Ashley was a clear winner of the trophy, but was followed by Riley, Blake, Zac and Ashton who all received MVP Runner-Up medals due to a deadlock for 2nd place in the voting.
